Organic traffic

Organic traffic refers to visitors who come to a website from unpaid search engine results, such as Google or Seznam (the leading Czech search engine). Unlike paid advertising (PPC), you don’t pay for these visits—users find the site because its content is relevant and high quality. Organic traffic is a key indicator of SEO success and, in the long run, the most stable source of website traffic.

Organic traffic is the single largest source of website traffic, and its value is backed by extensive research:

  • The dominant channel: organic search accounts for 53.3% of all trackable website traffic. In B2B, the share is even higher—over 64%. BrightEdge’s research analyzed thousands of domains and tens of billions of sessions (BrightEdge – Channel Share Report, 2019). Data from 2025 confirms that organic search remains the main source of traffic even in the age of AI (BrightEdge – AI Search Report, 2025)
  • Higher-quality visitors: organic traffic converts at an average of 2.6% in B2B and 2.1% in B2C. Paid search shows a lower conversion rate of around 1.5%. On top of that, the first organic result gets on average 19x more clicks than the first paid position (First Page Sage – Conversion Rate by Channel, 2025)
  • Competition for clicks is growing: a study by SparkToro and Datos showed that 58.5% of US searches end without a click. Out of every 1,000 searches, only 360 clicks go to the open web. That makes every organic visitor more and more valuable (SparkToro – Zero-Click Search Study, 2024)
  • Position determines traffic: an analysis of 200,000+ keywords showed that the first position on Google has a CTR of about 19%, while the second position gets just 12.6%. The top three results together capture more than two-thirds of all clicks (GrowthSrc – Organic CTR Study, 2025)

FAQ

How long does it take for organic traffic to start growing?

SEO results typically start to show within 3–6 months, but building organic traffic to its full potential takes 12 months or more. Unlike paid advertising, which stops working the moment you pause the budget, organic traffic keeps delivering results over the long term. BrightEdge data shows that organic search has held a dominant share of traffic for more than a decade (BrightEdge – Channel Share Report).

Why is my organic traffic dropping even though I rank well?

The main cause is the rise of zero-click searches and AI Overviews. A 2025 GrowthSrc study documents a 32% drop in first-position CTR compared to 2024—from 28% to 19%. This is mainly because Google shows AI Overviews for a growing number of queries. The solution is to optimize for featured snippets, use structured data, and build your brand (GrowthSrc – Organic CTR Study, 2025).

What is the difference between organic and paid traffic?

Organic traffic comes from unpaid search engine results and is built through SEO. Paid traffic (PPC) comes from ads where you pay for every click. According to First Page Sage, organic traffic has a higher conversion rate (2.6% vs. 1.5% in B2B), and the first organic result gets 19x more clicks than the first paid one (First Page Sage – Conversion Rate by Channel, 2025).
